Housing Action Coalition of
Washington County, Utah

OUR MISSION

Attainable Housing is safe, attainable, and affordable housing of all types for all ages and income levels.

The Housing Action Coalition (HAC) is a group of municipal and community stakeholders and concerned residents working together since 2019 to create attainable housing for individuals and families who want to live, work, and enjoy the beauty of Washington County. We’re combining innovative thinking with the active expertise and commitment of stakeholders who know healthy communities are built upon having a place to call home. We share a vision with other housing advocates across the region who believe everyone deserves a safe place to live and thrive.

Our Challenge: Research has shown that the availability of stable, healthy, and safe housing is key to creating positive life outcomes for all individuals and families and is directly tied to the economic prosperity of a community. The tight housing market in Washington County is having an adverse impact on the lives of individuals and families and poses threats to the continued growth, health, and prosperity of this region.

Our Mission: To increase the public’s awareness and understanding of the attainable housing challenge and inspire collaborative action to increase the number of all types of housing units that are attainable, affordable and safe, for all ages and income levels.

Educate. Collaborate. Advocate

Over the last three years HAC has worked to play a role in educating its members and the public about the housing crisis. We believe we’ve made some headway, but our work is evolving based on developments happening on the ground.

We continue to have occasional roundtables on timely housing issues, produce a periodic newsletter, and collaborate and support others who are doing housing work. During our Forum in October 2024, we illustrated where progress is being made and where we still need to do some work.

HAC has evolved over time, working to make sure we are contributing to the solution and not just talking about the housing problem. It will expand its work to better engage the “key players that can work on the solutions such as elected officials, builders, nonprofits, realtors, financial institutions as well as other stakeholders.

These individuals have been part of HAC over the years and our work has complemented theirs but we need to do better to engage with them. We are at an important inflection point and need to stop working in silos and start working together better to make a real difference.

So HAC will begin to be more proactive and intentional in its efforts and focus more on advocacy. This means attending public meetings and hearings and speaking on behalf of attainable housing. One of our members attended a city council meeting in October and felt he was the only reasonable voice talking about the need to increase the attainable housing supply and why increasing density doesn’t need to be a bad thing. He thinks the NIMBYs may have won that one!

But we need more advocacy work and HAC will focus more on that beginning in 2025. We believe combining advocacy with our efforts to intentionally engage others who can really make things happen is a winning combination for our community. We have begun working with some of the key stakeholders and will be reaching out to more of you as this work develops. We’re hoping you will accept our call to action when it’s ready and that you’ll support our new tag line of: Educate. Collaborate. Advocate.
